Daniel Dhers came out of nowhere to dominate BMX in Park. Has he really been riding pro for only five years?

It’s hard to believe that Daniel Dhers hasn’t been in the BMX scene for a lifetime. How can one person burst onto the scene and dominate a sport in only a few years?

A Late Bloomer.

Unlike many riders in BMX today, Daniel Dhers hasn't been riding a bike since early childhood. In fact, Dhers didn’t even start riding until the age of 12, and he only did so to hang out with a group of friends who all had bikes themselves. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where he first picked up a bike. He spent time riding at a local skate park, which eventually closed. At the age of 16, Dhers and his family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. There he faced the same problem, the park he rode at closed and he was back to street riding. In 2004, Dhers traveled to Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania for the chance to ride with the most skilled and determined riders around, including Jamie Bestwick. His two-week stay turned into an entire summer and he returned the following year.

Going Pro and Getting Known.

Dhers began competing in 2003 and his rookie year was a fiercely competitive one. He became known for his precision riding style, which was no doubt the result of having practiced tricks repeatedly until he perfected every aspect of them.

That practice and determination served him well as he seemed to burst onto the scene in 2006 and claim his spot at the top of the BMX elite. At X Games 12, Dhers won the bronze medal in the Park comp. He also competed in his first AST Dew Tour in 2006. Dhers claimed his first win that year at the Right Guard Open in Denver, CO and won the Dew Cup that year and the following. Dhers also won his first X Games gold medal during the 2007 season (X Games 13).

Can He Stay at the Top?

During the 2006 season Dhers did 360 and tailwhip variations that nobody else was pulling and in ’07 threw out a flatspin 720. For three years he has been the rider to beat in BMX Park competitions throughout the world. For the 2008 season he’s putting together 720 variations that are leaving most of his competitors behind and he may be on his way to being the first rider to pull a perfect season on the AST Dew tour. At this point is there anything Daniel Dhers can’t accomplish?
