The Maloof Money Cup is offering skateboarders the chance to compete for the largest purse in skateboarding and, most importantly, is offering respect.

In the world of skateboarding tournaments that debut one day and close up shop the next, there is a new hope on the scene. The Maloof Money Cup debuted July 11, 2008 at the Orange County Fair. The new comp is offering one of the largest purses in skateboarding history. Among the elite skaters who showed up to claim the prize were Jereme Rogers, Ryan Sheckler, Shaun White, Bob Burnquist, Andy MacDonald, and Elissa Steamer.

The Maloof Money Cup is the brainchild of Joe and Gavin Maloof. The Maloof brothers are members of the well-known Maloof family who count among their possessions: two basketball teams (the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Monarchs), the Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, an arena (Arco), and a production company. When skateboarding piqued their interest they developed an event that would showcase the best talent in the business while offering a prize purse of over $400,000.

The Maloofs worked with members of the skateboarding community to assure that their concept would meet the needs of the competitors, provide a positive experience for all involved, and promote the skateboarding lifestyle. The Maloofs believe that skaters should be treated as professional athletes and should have access to the best equipment and compensation. The Maloofs also developed the Maloof Skateboarding Assistance Foundation, which they describe as “the first insurance fund ever created for catastrophically injured skaters.”

The Maloof Money Cup took place on July 11-13, 2008. Three professional level US Championship competitions were held during the three-day festival: Men’s Pro Street, Ladies Pro Street, and Men’s Pro Vert. A US Amateur competition was also held during the event. Riders competed for prize money, which was awarded as follows:

1st Place Men’s Pro Street: $100,000 prize

1st Place Men’s Pro Vert: $75,000

1st Place Ladies Pro Street: $25,000.

The following are the final results from the first annual Maloof Money Cup:

Ladies Pro Street-

1st Place Lacey Baker

2nd Place Rachel Reinhard

3rd Place Vanessa Torres

Men’s Pro Street-

1st Place Paul Rodriguez

2nd Place Nyjah Huston

3rd Place Chris Cole

Men’s Pro Vert-

1st Pierre-Luc Gagnon

2nd Place Shaun White

The Maloof Money Cup is an exciting new event that will hopefully endure and help take skateboarding to a new level within the arena of professional sports.
