The Zephyr skateboard team pioneered skateboarding as we know it today. Now, a debate is growing over the cultural significance of the building which may be demolished

A Santa Monica landmark for surfers and skateboarders may be in danger. The building that houses Horizons West surf shop and Zephyr skateboard shop has been slated for demolition. The Santa Monica Landmarks Commission is now reviewing recommendations that the building being designated as an historic landmark.

During the 1970's Zephyr's surfboard factory played a prominent role in the evolution of both surfing and skateboarding into the sports we know today. The Zephyr skateboard team (the Z-boys) demonstrated an aggressive style of skating that hadn't ever been seen before.

Both Horizons West and Zephyr's were featured in the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001) and the film Lords of Dogtown (2005). Many who are opposed to the demolition argue that although the building may not be architecturally important, the cultural significance can't be overlooked.

The historical significance of Horizons West and Zephyrs will be investigated further and discussed at the November 13, 2006 Commission meeting.
