Valdez is known for its extreme skiing. There is also Dean Cumming's http://www.h2oguides.com/ Thompson Pass and the surrounding Chugash Mountains receive around sixty feet of snow each year. I live about ten miles from where it starts. Most of our kids in Valdez learn to snowboard or ski at the "Pass" on the road run. The road run takes advantage of a large hairpin curve in the Richardson Highway that lets you drive up towards the pass and ski back down to the highway below. It's like learning on a black diamond!

When I was checking into heli-skiing, Valdez came up most often! In my area there is Telluride Helitrax. They pick people up from Aspen, Vail, etc. to ski above Telluride. I'm not sure how the snow compares. I've never been to Alaska but I imagine you have more of it, and more "untouched" powder.
